Origin: Hungary / Poland / Croatia / USA
Production: Cleavers are annuals with straggling stems which grow along the ground and over other plants, easily recognized by the clinging leaves and sticky seeds that attach themselves. All parts of the plant are used in herbal medicine. It is harvested just prior to when the plant blooms small, white flowers in early summer.
Qualities: Cleavers has a long history of use as an alternative medicine both internally and topically, and continues to be used by modern herbalists to treat a wide range of conditions. It is often used as a cleansing lymphatic tonic, and as a gentle diuretic. Cleavers can be used as a medicinal poultice for wounds and other skin irritations.
Common Use: Cleavers has no strong odor, and has a bitter, slightly fresh taste. It can be made into a tea, extract, encapsulated, or sprinkled onto food.
Storage: Store in a cool, dry, dark place in an airtight container.
